SJDM Local Government Takes Over Water Supply from PrimeWater

Manila: San Jose del Monte The local government of San Jose del Monte has taken control of the city's water supply operations, previously managed by PrimeWater Infrastructure Corp., in an effort to tackle the ongoing water distribution crisis. The transition marks a significant shift in the management of the water supply and wastewater systems, as stipulated by City Ordinance No. 2026-03-012.

According to Philippines News Agency, Mayor Florida Robes has been vested with the authority to oversee the facilities and assets of the San Jose Water District and PrimeWater. The ordinance empowers her to appoint an interim water utility operator and ensure due diligence in the management of these vital services. During a press briefing, Mayor Robes emphasized the critical nature of the water crisis, highlighting its impact on public health, safety, and daily life.

The city government has pledged to restore a reliable water supply within a year and to make the water district more transparent and accessible to residents. This move follows the non-renewal of PrimeWater's business permit and the termination notice of the joint venture agreement due to issues with water supply adequacy and consistency.

Mayor Robes expressed the city's stance on not being unfairly blamed for the crisis, asserting that the original joint venture agreement was not initiated by the local government. She stated that the city's authority to address the issue is now clear, and they are actively seeking interim operators with the necessary expertise and resources to enhance the water system.

The city's actions are supported by the Local Government Code of 1991, which mandates local governments to ensure basic services and promote the welfare, health, and safety of their communities.
