Tacloban city: Several areas in Eastern Visayas suspended classes on Tuesday as heavy rains from the shear line triggered flooding in low-lying areas of the region. In this city, Mayor Alfred Romualdez issued an executive order suspending classes at all levels in both public and private schools, as well as work in government. 'I strongly suggest that you stay in your homes and do not go out as much as possible for everyone's safety,' Romualdez said in a statement. As the regional capital, the city hosts large college campuses with students from different parts of the region.
According to Philippines News Agency, in Leyte province, local government units that issued class suspension directives include the towns of Palo, Alangalang, Jaro, Kananga, Matalom, Pastrana, Burauen, San Miguel, and Tabontabon. The mayors of Calbiga, Catbalogan City, Daram, Motiong, Pinabacdao, and Zumarraga in Samar; Maasin City in Southern Leyte; Kawayan and Naval in Biliran; and Giporlos in Eastern Samar have all issued similar orders.
Over the weekend, several areas have been experiencing heavy rains due to a shear line affecting the eastern section of Visayas and Mindanao. The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) warned of possible flooding and landslides in Leyte and Samar provinces due to heavy rains from a shear line. The weather bureau identified several rivers in six provinces likely to be impacted by the heavy rains, including Sangputan, Palo, Solano, Daguitan, Marabong, Cadacan, Bongquirogon, Salug, Pagbanagaran, Pagsangahan, and Binahaan in Leyte; and Catarman, Bugko, Pambujan, Catubig, Palapag, Mano, and Gamay in Northern Samar.
Other rivers include Oras, Dolores, Ulot, Taft, Borongan, Suribao, Llorente, Balangiga, and Sulat in Eastern Samar; Basey, Silaga, Calbiga, and Jibatan in Samar; Bisay, Himbangan, and Pandan in Southern Leyte; and all river systems in Biliran province.
