Senators on Wednesday renewed calls to end hazing following the death of a 19-year-old maritime student in Cavite, saying strict enforcement of the Anti-Hazing Act of 2018 is needed to prevent similar tragedies. Senate Majority Leader Juan Miguel Zubiri urged schools to strengthen safeguards against hazing and ensure proper monitoring of initiation-related activities.

According to Philippines News Agency, Mark Kenneth Alcedo, a freshman student of the Philippine Nautical and Technological Colleges, died on Sunday afternoon after allegedly undergoing fraternity initiation rites in Dasmari±as, Cavite. Police discovered signs of torture on the victim's body and are now searching for at least 15 suspects linked to the incident.

Senate Majority Leader Juan Miguel Zubiri emphasized the need for strict enforcement, real accountability, and prevention efforts, stating that repeated incidents must be addressed decisively to protect students. Senator Joel Villanueva echoed these sentiments, condemning the act and urging authorities to identify and prosecute those responsible.

Senator Sherwin Gatchalian called for swift action from law enforcement, stressing the importance of accountability for those involved in the incident. He urged authorities to find, hold accountable, and charge all individuals linked to the hazing.

Senator Jinggoy Estrada expressed sympathy for the victim's family and reiterated the need for strict enforcement of the Anti-Hazing Law. He highlighted the senseless loss of young lives due to violent initiation rites and emphasized that violence has no place in organizations promoting brotherhood and camaraderie.
