Senators See Stronger Labor Policies Under Tolentino

Manila: Senators on Tuesday expressed confidence that newly appointed Labor Secretary Francis Tolentino would strengthen worker protection measures and introduce reforms at the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) amid evolving labor challenges.

According to Philippines News Agency, Senator Joel Villanueva welcomed Tolentino's appointment, citing his experience as a lawmaker and former chairperson of the Senate Committee on Labor during the 18th and 19th Congresses. Villanueva noted Tolentino's dedication and perseverance as a lawmaker, reflecting on their time working together in the Senate.

Villanueva highlighted that Tolentino's legal background could provide a fresh perspective in addressing issues such as living wage policies, labor protection, working conditions, and the impact of artificial intelligence and machine learning on Filipino workers. He expressed hope that Tolentino would support efforts to institutionalize and expand the Tulong Panghanapbuhay sa Ating Disadvantaged/Displaced Workers (TUPAD) program, aiming to make it more comprehensive to create a meaningful impact on the beneficiaries' lives.

Senator Sherwin Gatchalian also welcomed Tolentino's appointment, emphasizing his extensive legal expertise and solid understanding of labor policies and standards. Gatchalian expressed confidence that Tolentino would significantly strengthen the labor sector as the country faces various challenges, including the need to bolster the economy to create more jobs.
