Senators Push Expanded Aid, United Response Amid Oil Price Hikes

Manila: Senators called on Monday for a coordinated government response and expanded support measures to cushion the impact of rising oil prices amid tensions in the Middle East. Senator Joseph Victor 'JV' Ejercito proposed creating an inter-agency body to coordinate austerity measures and manage potential fuel supply disruptions, citing the need for early action.

According to Philippines News Agency, Ejercito emphasized the importance of preparation, cautioning against waiting for the crisis to escalate. He highlighted the potential 'domino effect' on essential sectors such as food and transport due to global dependence on Middle Eastern oil.

In addition, Senator Risa Hontiveros advocated for a comprehensive approach that goes beyond suspending fuel excise taxes. She proposed expanded subsidies specifically targeting the transport sector. Hontiveros presented a PHP52.8 billion subsidy package, with PHP12 billion allocated for transport aid, urging the government to expedite the distribution of assistance to drivers and operators.

Oil prices have surged, with diesel surpassing the triple-digit mark last week, driven by the ongoing conflict in the Middle East, which has significantly impacted transport workers. In response, tricycle drivers in Metro Manila received a PHP5,000 fuel subsidy last week to alleviate the burden of rising costs.

The program offering fuel subsidies to the transport sector is set to expand nationwide beginning April 6, as announced by Malaca±ang on Monday.
