Senators Back Crisis Committee for Coordinated Response to Oil Crisis

Manila: Senators said Tuesday the creation of a government crisis committee would ensure a coordinated response to the impact of the ongoing Middle East conflict on fuel supply and food security. President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. earlier ordered the creation of a crisis committee to ensure a stable supply of oil and protect consumers from the impact of the Middle East conflict.

According to Philippines News Agency, Senator Joel Villanueva backed the move, stressing the need for a whole-of-government approach to protect Filipino households. He stated that the administration's decision demands nothing less than a comprehensive response, emphasizing that ensuring a stable supply of food and petroleum products is crucial for every Filipino family.

Senator Villanueva noted that the Senate has strengthened oversight through the approval of a resolution creating the Proactive Response and Oversight for Timely and Effective Crisis Strategy (PROTECT) Committee. This committee is expected to enhance the government's ability to manage crises effectively.

Senate Minority Leader Alan Peter Cayetano said the directive aligns with earlier Senate calls for a national contingency framework. He emphasized the importance of having a contingency plan in place to prepare for potential disasters or crises, underscoring that it is essential to expect and prepare for the worst scenarios.

The crisis committee is expected to align government measures and mitigate the effects of the oil price volatility in the domestic market, ensuring that the nation is better equipped to handle the disruptions arising from the Middle East conflict.
