Senate Adopts Twin Resolutions for Mindanao Quake Recovery

Manila: The Senate on Wednesday adopted two resolutions seeking full government support for communities devastated by the magnitude 7.8 earthquake in Mindanao and expressing gratitude to responders in the disaster's aftermath.

According to Philippines News Agency, Proposed Senate Resolution No. 447, sponsored by Sen. Joel Villanueva, urges the national government to ensure adequate funding and resources for the relief, rehabilitation, reconstruction, and recovery of earthquake-hit communities. Villanueva emphasized that the issue extends beyond funding, highlighting the importance of aiding those whose lives have been affected by the earthquake. He noted that initial assessments estimate the damage to public and private infrastructure at PHP1.13 billion, a number that may increase as evaluations continue in the impacted regions. Villanueva expressed appreciation for the responders who provided life-saving assistance in the disaster's aftermath.

Villanueva stated, "Heroism saves lives, but resources rebuild communities. Compassion comforts victims, but funding restores livelihoods," as he advocated for the immediate adoption of the resolution. Senators JV Ejercito, Francis Pangilinan, Erwin Tulfo, Raffy Tulfo, and Senate President Sherwin Gatchalian supported the measure, emphasizing the need for both immediate relief and long-term recovery support for Mindanao. With unanimous consent, all senators present were made co-sponsors, and the resolution was adopted.

The Senate also adopted Proposed Senate Resolution No. 452, which expresses the chamber's gratitude to rescue workers, social welfare and healthcare personnel, local government units, uniformed services, civil volunteer groups, and humanitarian responders who aided affected communities after the earthquake. Gatchalian articulated the resolution as a gesture of thanks to frontliners, including the Department of Social Welfare and Development, Armed Forces of the Philippines, local governments, and other responders who swiftly assisted quake victims.
