Manila: The Philippine National Police (PNP) has finalized its security plan for the 40th anniversary of the EDSA People Power Revolution and the Trillion Peso March on Wednesday. This preparation comes even as the PNP has not identified any security threats to the gathering, which is expected to attract tens of thousands of attendees.
According to Philippines News Agency, PNP Chief Gen. Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. stated in a Tuesday announcement that no verified intelligence reports have indicated any security risks. However, the PNP remains vigilant, maintaining a high level of alertness to prevent any disruptions to the peaceful assembly. Nartatez emphasized that the goal is to ensure the planned activities proceed without incident.
In Metro Manila, the National Capital Region Police Office will deploy over 13,000 officers to secure key locations such as the EDSA Shrine and the People Power Monument in Quezon City. Additional security measures will be implemented in other significant areas. Nartatez has instructed Police Regional Offices across the country to increase alert levels and apply appropriate security measures.
Unit commanders have been directed to enforce maximum tolerance and work closely with local governments and event organizers. Regional chiefs have been tasked with activating intelligence teams to monitor potential agitators and misinformation. The PNP's strategy includes keeping police deployments visible yet non-intrusive.
Nartatez acknowledged the anticipated presence of multiple groups with differing views and reiterated the PNP's commitment to respecting the right to peaceful assembly while ensuring public safety. Church and civil society groups have scheduled activities for February 25 to commemorate the revolution's anniversary, including the Trillion Peso March, which follows recent anti-corruption protests.
