Sorsogon:The Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) - Bicol is implementing a project to provide satellite Internet connectivity to 352 public schools in Sorsogon. This initiative aims to improve access to digital learning resources, especially in geographically isolated and disadvantaged areas.

According to Philippines News Agency, John Nomel Ebuenga, who leads DICT-Bicol's Connectivity and Infrastructure Management Unit, stated that these schools have been prioritized under the agency's Free Wi-Fi for All program. This program aligns with President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.'s directive to enhance digital infrastructure in public schools.

The schools benefiting from this initiative are located in both urban and rural communities, particularly in regions where conventional telecommunications and fiber-optic services are sparse or unavailable. Ebuenga highlighted the challenges posed by unreliable or limited connectivity, which has hindered students and teachers from accessing online learning materials and participating in digital activities.

In response to these challenges, all 352 schools will be equipped with Internet access via Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellite technology. This type of connectivity is especially suitable for remote and underserved areas lacking conventional infrastructure.

The new satellite Internet service is expected to significantly enhance students' access to digital learning platforms and educational materials while providing teachers with additional online resources to improve lesson preparation and delivery. Ebuenga emphasized that the free Internet access would support the adaptation to digitalization and encourage active participation in digital education.

Furthermore, Ebuenga noted that expanding Internet access to public spaces could offer communities more opportunities to access information, online services, and participate in the digital economy. The initiative is designed to bridge the digital divide, offering benefits to students, workers, entrepreneurs, patients, and other residents in underserved communities by providing reliable online resource access without the financial burden of costly Internet services.
