Seoul: Samsung Electronics Co. announced that it has developed the industry's fastest Universal Flash Storage (UFS) 5.0 solution, which is designed to enable artificial intelligence (AI) models to operate directly on devices without the need for a network connection.
According to Philippines News Agency,the South Korean technology company stated that the next-generation UFS 5.0 memory is anticipated to be used as a storage solution in smartphones and other mobile devices, offering industry-leading performance. Choi Jang-seok, head of memory product planning at Samsung Electronics, emphasized in a press release the evolving role of storage devices in the era of on-device AI, noting their importance in defining AI experiences.
Samsung has scheduled mass production of the UFS 5.0 memory to begin in the fourth quarter of this year. This development is seen as a new benchmark for the next-generation mobile memory market. As generative AI transitions from the cloud to devices, there is a significant increase in the volume of data processed locally. Consequently, storage is transforming from a data storage medium to a core infrastructure supporting AI computing.
The enhanced performance of UFS 5.0 memory is expected to notably reduce latency and improve response times for users running large language models (LLMs) in on-device AI environments, according to the company.
