Samahang Plaridel Launches Campus Journalism Seminar Series in Quezon City

Quezon city: The Association of Philippine Journalists-Samahang Plaridel Foundation, Inc. is set to launch the first in a series of campus journalism seminars on January 30 at the Eulogio Rodriguez Jr. High School along Mayon Avenue in Quezon City.

According to Philippines News Agency, the event, titled 'Usapang Plaridel: Campus Journalism Lecture Series,' will feature four veteran print and broadcast journalists visiting various public high schools across Metro Manila from January to December. This initiative is part of Samahang Plaridel's mission to enhance the standards of journalism in the country.

Evelyn Quiroz, president of the Association of Philippine Journalists-Samahang Plaridel, stated that the lecture series aims to offer valuable insights and inspiring lessons to aspiring student-journalists. The seminars will be led by seasoned journalists, including Nestor Cuartero of the Manila Bulletin/The Market Monitor, who will cover feature and lifestyle writing; Frederick Nasiad of the Manila Times, who will focus on news writing; Lito Cinco of People's Tonight, who will specialize in sportswriting; and Benjamin Alejandro, who will discuss radio broadcasting.

Jonathan Gesmundo of the Market Monitor is also scheduled to deliver a lecture on Marcelo H. del Pilar, the 'Father of Philippine Journalism,' highlighting his writings at La Solidaridad under the pen name Plaridel. Quiroz expressed gratitude to Eulogio Rodriguez Jr. High School Principal Ernesto Ferrer and ERJHS Alumni Association president Ramon Ferreros for their support in organizing the seminar-workshop.

In addition to the seminar at ERJHS, future seminar-workshops are planned at the New Era High School in Tandang Sora, Quezon City on February 20, and the Jose P. Laurel High School in Gagalangin, Tondo on March 13.

The Association of Philippine Journalists-Samahang Plaridel was established in October 2003, with veteran journalists such as Max Soliven, Jullie Yap Daza, Adrian Cristobal, Neal Cruz, Carmen Guerrero-Nakpil, Rod Reyes, Crispulo Icban, and Rolando Estabillo as founding officers, to maintain high standards of journalism in the country.

High schools interested in participating in the 'Usapang Plaridel' Campus Journalism Lecture Series are encouraged to contact Project Director Ed Andaya of People's Tonight or Samahang Plaridel secretary Nelly Lumbaca at the Samahang Plaridel office located at the 2/F Royal Bay Terrace Condominium, U.N.
