S. Korea Backs Philippines’ ASEAN Chairship and Peace Efforts

Manila: South Korean President Lee Jae-myung on Tuesday expressed support for the Philippines' chairship of the 2026 Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Summit and Related Summits. Speaking after his bilateral meeting with President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. at Malaca±an Palace in Manila, Lee said they agreed to create synergies between the Philippines' ASEAN agenda and Korea-ASEAN strategic visions.

According to Philippines News Agency, this year's ASEAN Agenda includes Peace and Security Anchors, Prosperity Corridors, and People Empowerment, while the Korea-ASEAN strategic visions focus on contributing to dreams and hopes, growth and innovation, and regional peace and stability. 'The Republic of Korea will proactively support the Philippines as this year's chair of ASEAN,' Lee said.

The Philippines' ASEAN chairship centers on regional peace, economic growth, and human development. South Korea, a dialogue partner of ASEAN, has been actively supporting initiatives in trade, cultural exchange, and regional security, reinforcing its ties with the Philippines and other members of the regional bloc.

Lee reaffirmed South Korea's enhanced ties with the Philippines, 'building on historic bonds and friendship, as well as robust, substantial cooperation.' He also emphasized the importance of people-to-people and cultural exchanges between the two countries. In 2025, some 1.35 million Korean nationals visited the Philippines, while 610,000 Filipinos visited South Korea -- the highest number among Asian nations.

Marcos, meanwhile, thanked South Korea for protecting the rights and welfare of over 70,000 Filipinos living and working in the host country.
