Bicol: A married couple holding leadership roles in the New People's Army (NPA) surrendered to government troops in Bicol this week, the Army's 9th Infantry Division (9ID) reported Thursday.
According to Philippines News Agency, Maj. Frank Roldan, 9ID spokesperson, identified the couple as 'Pots' and his wife, who used the aliases Luis, Haraly, and Sab. They served as secretary and political instructor for a guerrilla front operating in parts of Camarines Norte and Camarines Sur.
The couple surrendered to the 42nd Infantry Battalion on Tuesday, turning over a .30 caliber rifle and a .60 caliber machine gun with ammunition. Roldan said the couple told army officers they abandoned the armed struggle to pursue a peaceful life for their family.
He noted that 18 NPA rebels, supporters, and leaders have so far surrendered in the region since January. Maj. Gen. Aldwin Almase, 9ID commander, said in a statement that the surrender is expected to encourage further defections, especially from those under the couple's former command.
