Quake-Affected Families in Central Visayas Reach 166,000

Bogo city: The number of families affected by the magnitude 6.9 earthquake that struck Bogo City, Cebu, and nearby provinces on September 30 has increased to 165,998, according to the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) on Tuesday. This marks a significant rise from the 155,094 families reported the day before.

According to Philippines News Agency, the NDRRMC’s latest report indicates that the affected families, totaling 611,624 individuals, are all from Region 7, known as Central Visayas. Of these, 415 families are currently residing in four evacuation centers, while 6,937 families have sought temporary shelter elsewhere.

The NDRRMC is still in the process of verifying the reported 72 fatalities and 559 injuries resulting from the earthquake. Additionally, the quake has damaged 39,806 houses, with 3,743 of them being completely destroyed. As of Tuesday, the agency has not yet provided estimates for damage to agriculture and infrastructure.

In response to the disaster, the Philippine Navy announced that its transport vessel, BRP Dagupan City (LS-551), has reached Cebu with relief goods and rescue equipment. According to PN Public Affairs Office chief Capt. Benjo Negranza, the ship arrived on Monday, carrying food packs, bottled water, hygiene kits, sleeping mats, and other essential supplies. The vessel also brought disaster response vehicles, equipment, and personnel to support rescue efforts and coordinate operations with local authorities.
