Python Rescued from Firecrackers-Induced Blaze Handed Over to DENR

Caloocan: An injured reticulated python (Malayopython reticulatus) was turned over to the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) after being rescued from a grass fire caused by firecrackers and pyrotechnics during New Year celebrations.

According to Philippines News Agency, the DENR National Capital Region (NCR) reported that its Metropolitan Environmental Office (MEO) received reports from Barangay 177 officials in Caloocan who discovered the injured python. The fire, which resulted from the use of fireworks and pyrotechnics on January 1, led to the discovery of the python the following day. The snake was found with burn injuries around its mouth, suggesting it had been affected by the blaze.

In a statement, the DENR-National Capital Region explained, "During initial observation, the python's mouth was found to have burns around its mouth. Assuming it was dead, it was temporarily placed in a container before being buried. When it was realized that the python was still alive, the barangay immediately contacted the Enforcement Unit of MEO-North."

A swift retrieval operation was conducted, and the python was safely transported to the Biodiversity Management Bureau for necessary medical attention and rehabilitation. The DENR-NCR has since urged the public to remain vigilant and report any wildlife-related incidents, particularly during festive times.

The agency also highlighted the importance of responsible firework usage and prompt coordination with authorities to protect wildlife and safeguard the environment.
