Legazpi city: The Department of Health (DOH) 5 (Bicol) has issued a public advisory following the continued restlessness of Mayon Volcano. DOH-5 Public Health Preparedness and Response Unit head Dr. Aurora Teresa Daluro called on the public to take proper precautions in case of a volcanic eruption, especially against ashfall and related hazards.
According to Philippines News Agency, Dr. Daluro advised families to prepare a 'go bag' with enough drinking water, food, clothes, a first-aid kit, and essential medicines, ensuring all supplies are not expired. To reduce ash exposure, residents were told to keep doors and windows closed and use thick curtains if available. Wearing an N95 mask is recommended, but medical or dust masks, or a damp cloth can also be used to cover the nose and mouth during ashfall.
Residents were reminded to safely remove ash from roofs and surrounding areas, as heavy ash buildup may cause damage or roof collapse. The public was also urged to follow evacuation orders and instructions from local authorities at all times. Anyone experiencing difficulty breathing should seek medical help immediately, especially those with allergies or respiratory conditions.
For eye protection, residents should wear safety goggles and avoid contact lenses during ashfall. If eye irritation occurs, they are advised not to rub their eyes and to rinse gently with clean water or consult a doctor. To ensure food safety, the DOH advised proper handwashing, thorough cleaning of food items, checking expiration dates, and keeping water containers tightly covered to prevent ash contamination.
Daluro mentioned that DOH-5 continues to closely monitor the situation in coordination with rural health units and Albay's Provincial Health Office.
