Probe Underway on Missing Rizal Bust in Paris – DFA

Paris: The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) on Tuesday announced that an investigation is currently underway regarding the disappearance of Dr. Jose Rizal’s bust in Paris, France.

According to Philippines News Agency, the bust, which was situated at Place Jose Rizal in Paris’ 9th arrondissement, was likely removed during the night between October 25 and 26. The DFA has reported the incident to local authorities in Paris, and the Philippine Embassy in France is actively coordinating with them to track the progress of the investigation.

The DFA emphasized that the bust of Dr. Jos© Rizal was a cherished landmark for Filipinos in Paris and symbolized the enduring friendship between the Philippines and France. While the motive behind the removal is still unknown, the agency noted that public monuments are often susceptible to vandalism, destruction, or theft.

In response to the incident, the DFA mentioned that the embassy is working closely with the Filipino community in Paris to explore all possible avenues for the recovery or replacement of the bust. They remain committed to preserving the memory and values that the monument represents.
