Priest Withdraws from Tagbilaran Bishop Appointment Before Installation

Tagbilaran: A Catholic priest appointed as the upcoming bishop of the Diocese of Tagbilaran in Bohol has decided not to assume the position. Citing personal limitations and a process of discernment, Fr. Gerardo Saco Jr. sought understanding for what he described as a 'change of heart.'

According to Philippines News Agency, Fr. Saco made his decision known just days before his scheduled episcopal ordination and installation as the new bishop on May 26. He expressed that the choice stemmed from a profound awareness of his own human limitations and inadequacies, as mentioned in an article on the Catholic Bishops' Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) News.

Fr. Saco had been appointed by Pope Leo XIV on March 25 to succeed Archbishop Alberto Uy, who was transferred to Cebu in September 2025. Despite stepping back from the bishop appointment, he assured his continued commitment as a priest, emphasizing his dedication to journeying with the faithful in faith in the Risen Lord.

At the time of his appointment, Fr. Saco was serving as the diocesan administrator, a role he will continue to fulfill following his decision.
