PPA Expects Over 1.1 Million Port Passengers for Elections 2025

Manila: The Philippine Ports Authority (PPA) is anticipating a significant increase in passenger traffic at its ports during the upcoming 2025 elections, with expectations exceeding 1.1 million travelers.

According to Philippines News Agency, the PPA’s situation report forecasts a total of 1,155,238 port passengers from May 9 to 13, marking a five percent rise compared to the 1,100,227 maritime passengers recorded during the 2022 elections. This surge in passenger numbers underscores the critical role of maritime transport in facilitating voter movement across the archipelago.

Current data from the Port Management Office (PMO) indicates that PMO Panay/Guimaras is experiencing the highest passenger traffic, registering 182,359 individuals. Following closely are PMO Batangas with 110,125 passengers, PMO Bicol with 94,543, PMO Mindoro with 89,482, and PMO Bohol with 77,619 passengers. Notably, the Matnog Port under PMO Bicol has seen long lines of passengers since May 2, prompting the deployment of additional ships on the Matnog, Sorsogon – Allen, Northern Samar route to accommodate the increased demand.

The PPA is extending its cooperation to the Commission on Elections (Comelec) by ensuring port access and prioritizing loading and unloading for election-related cargo. Coordination with shipping lines and port terminal operators is in place to guarantee efficient cargo handling. Furthermore, the PPA is providing logistical support and coordination to the Comelec, the Armed Forces of the Philippines, and the Philippine National Police, particularly in island and remote areas.

In preparation for the anticipated influx, the PPA has stationed terminal personnel on standby to address any emergencies that may arise, thereby prioritizing the safety and security of maritime passengers. Cargo security measures are also being emphasized to ensure smooth operations during this critical period.
