Pope Francis Names Monsignor Glenn Corsiga as New Bishop of Diocese of Ipil

Manila: Pope Francis has appointed Monsignor Glenn Corsiga as the new bishop of the Diocese of Ipil in Zamboanga Sibugay province. The Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) news website reported that Corsiga’s appointment was announced by the Vatican at 12 noon (6 p.m. Manila time) on Monday. The diocese has been without a permanent bishop since August 2023 following Archbishop Julius Tonel’s transfer to lead the Archdiocese of Zamboanga.

According to Philippine News Agency, Monsignor Elizar Cielo has been managing the diocese in the capacity of diocesan administrator during the interim period. Corsiga hails from Dumaguete and pursued his philosophical studies at St. Joseph Seminary College in Sibulan, Negros Oriental, and theological studies at the Divine Word Seminary in Tagaytay City. He was ordained as a priest for the Dumaguete diocese on December 14, 1993, and has since held numerous positions within the church.

Corsiga’s early assignments included serving as parish vicar at Sta. Catherine of Alexandria in Dumaguete and Sta. Clara de Montefalco in Pasay. He also contributed as the spiritual director of St. Joseph Seminary College and chaplain of St. Paul University in Dumaguete. In 2000, Corsiga took on the role of vice chancellor of the diocese, later becoming rector of St. Joseph Seminary College in 2002. In 2011, Pope Benedict XVI honored him with the title of ‘monsignor.’

His recent roles have included being the parish priest of St. James the Greater in Tanjay and the episcopal vicar of the diocese’s north district. Since 2017, he has served as the vicar general of the diocese and as parish priest of St. Augustine of Hippo Parish in Bacong, Negros Oriental province since 2020.
