Manila: Police personnel will be deployed to assist in traffic management and other security-related matters amid the ongoing rehabilitation works on Epifanio Delos Santos Avenue (EDSA), the Philippine National Police (PNP) on Friday said.
According to Philippines News Agency, PNP acting chief Lt. Gen. Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. stated that the PNP aims to assist by providing personnel augmentation to ease traffic flow. Local government units and the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority are also expected to deploy their own personnel. However, Nartatez mentioned that their territorial units and the Highway Patrol Group could serve as additional support at strategic points along EDSA and alternative routes.
Nartatez emphasized the anticipation of heavy traffic and expressed readiness to assist with manpower for traffic management and peace and order-related concerns, such as preventing road rage through the visible presence of police personnel.
The rehabilitation works, which began at 11 p.m. on December 24, involve concrete reblocking and asphalt overlaying and are expected to cause gridlocks on one of Metro Manila's busiest roads. The Department of Public Works and Highways has released schedules for the rehabilitation works, and the PNP is urging motorists to plan their trips in advance.
Rapid deployment teams will be on standby to respond to accidents, vehicle breakdowns, or other emergencies that may arise during the rehabilitation period.
