Metro manila: The Philippine National Police (PNP) and the Department of Transportation (DOTr) have ramped up security measures as travelers return to Metro Manila and other urban centers following the Holy Week break. PNP chief Gen. Jose Melencio Nartatez has instructed all commanders to maintain a visible and active presence on major roads and at transportation hubs.
According to Philippines News Agency, Nartatez highlighted the importance of collaborating with other government agencies to ensure the safety and roadworthiness of passenger buses and public utility vehicles (PUVs), as well as the alertness of drivers. He stated, "Safe travel of millions of our kababayan (citizens) remains our top priority. We remain on full alert status and our personnel on the ground are ready to respond to any peace and order and public safety concerns."
In parallel, DOTr Secretary Giovanni Lopez has mandated the Office of Transportation Office (OTS) to conduct stringent inspections of both passengers' luggage and the OTS Security Screening Officers (SSOs) at airports. Lopez emphasized the need to prevent illegal activities and ensure passenger safety, warning that SSOs found violating the law, including theft, will face consequences.
Lopez has already ordered the removal of two SSOs and a supervisor at Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) Terminal 3 in Pasay City, following reports of a missing PHP7,000 and 1,000 new Taiwan dollars from an Australian passenger. An investigation into this incident is currently underway.
In a separate note, Nartatez praised PNP commanders and personnel for their efforts in maintaining a peaceful and orderly Holy Week observance. He acknowledged the dedication and hard work of personnel on the ground, stating, "Our sacrifices, from planning to implementation of the security measures, really paid off."
The PNP had mobilized over 98,000 officers to ensure security during Holy Week, with police forces across the country on full alert until April 5. Deployment focused on key areas such as churches, tourist spots, major roads, and transportation hubs, aligning with President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.'s directive to ensure traveler safety and maintain peace and order even after Holy Week.
