Manila: The Philippine National Police (PNP) has intensified its support for transport regulators in going after unauthorized fare increases, warning public utility vehicle operators against exploiting the ongoing spike in fuel prices.
According to Philippines News Agency, PNP chief Gen. Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. stated that police units nationwide are now actively assisting the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) in monitoring transport companies suspected of imposing illegal fare hikes. Gen. Nartatez emphasized the PNP's commitment to protecting commuters by ensuring strict adherence to rules and regulations.
Nartatez called on the public to report transport firms engaging in unauthorized fare increases, urging compatriots to report any incidents to prevent further violations. The Department of Transportation (DOTr) had earlier warned violators of potential consequences, including a show-cause order and possible license suspensions, following President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.'s directive to defer fare hikes.
To enforce compliance, the PNP is deploying personnel to monitor terminals and transport hubs, while enhancing complaint channels, including social media platforms. This move coincides with government efforts to provide subsidies to drivers and transport workers amid rising petroleum prices.
Nartatez mentioned that police coordination with transport agencies, including the DOTr, will be strengthened through joint inspections and random checkpoint operations. He also commended Quezon City police units for their swift resolution of a 'gas-and-run' incident, highlighting the need for vigilance amid fuel-related concerns.
In a specific incident, the La Loma Police Station facilitated the surrender of a driver who allegedly fled without paying for fuel worth PHP5,196 in Balintawak on March 22. Nartatez praised the police teams' quick action as a testament to the PNP's dedication to upholding the law.
Nartatez reminded motorists to remain law-abiding despite economic pressures, emphasizing the importance of discipline and respect. He warned that violators would be held accountable, and announced increased police visibility near commercial establishments, along with stronger coordination with fuel retailers and faster case build-up for prosecutions.
The PNP reiterated its commitment to monitoring incidents involving essential goods and services, cautioning that crimes driven by opportunity or hardship would be firmly addressed under the law.
