PNP Poised to Safeguard Fuel Subsidy Distribution for PUV Drivers

Manila: The Philippine National Police (PNP) announced its readiness to provide security for the upcoming distribution of fuel subsidies to public utility vehicle (PUV) drivers and operators impacted by the surge in fuel prices. PNP Chief Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. emphasized the importance of police presence during such activities, stating, "The presence of policemen is important in this kind of activity." He reiterated the PNP's commitment to the protection and welfare of all parties involved.

According to Philippines News Agency, the government's Department of Transportation (DOTr) is set to commence the distribution of PHP5,000 in subsidies next week, starting in Metro Manila before extending to the provinces. The DOTr plans to collaborate with the Department of Social Welfare and Development, the Department of the Interior and Local Government, and local government units to facilitate the rollout.

While most subsidies will be distributed through fuel subsidy cards, certain areas, particularly in the provinces, will continue to conduct manual payouts. Nartatez highlighted the necessity of coordination among involved agencies to ensure a quick, smooth, and orderly distribution process. He noted that the PNP is well-versed in securing such activities, drawing on experience from previous cash aid distributions.

"Our officers are trained to ensure the process is orderly and that every beneficiary is protected," Nartatez stated, reflecting on the PNP's role during past aid rollouts amid the Covid-19 pandemic. To maintain efficient operations, Nartatez instructed local police chiefs to strategically deploy personnel at distribution sites, aligning with directives from President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. and Interior Secretary Jonvic Remulla to support public utility drivers affected by the escalating oil prices.
