PNP Intensifies Security Measures for Concurrent Start of Ramadan and Lent

Manila: The Philippine National Police (PNP) on Monday announced an escalation in security efforts as the nation's Muslim and Christian populations prepare for the simultaneous commencement of Ramadan and Lent on February 18. This year marks a unique convergence where the Islamic holy month of fasting and the Christian season of reflection begin on the same day.

According to Philippines News Agency, the PNP has activated a comprehensive nationwide security strategy focusing on major transport hubs, places of worship, and popular tourist destinations. PNP chief Gen. Jose Melencio Nartatez, Jr. highlighted the need for secure environments for worship and contemplation during these significant religious periods.

Gen. Nartatez stated, "Police visibility and community engagement are our priority. We are deploying a sufficient number of personnel, including our Salaam Police Center units, to mosques and churches nationwide." The PNP is committed to ensuring that citizens can engage in religious activities without concerns for their safety. The plan includes real-time security adjustments and collaboration with local religious leaders to manage crowds and deter potential crimes.

To enhance safety and provide immediate assistance, authorities will establish 24/7 police assistance desks in proximity to major cathedrals and mosques. Gen. Nartatez also called on the public to support these efforts by remaining vigilant and reporting any suspicious activities, emphasizing, "If you see something, say something."
