PNP Intensifies Crackdown on Illegal Fireworks After Fatal Bulacan Explosion

Norzagaray: Acting Philippine National Police (PNP) chief Lt. Gen. Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. has announced intensified operations against illegal and unauthorized fireworks manufacturing facilities following a deadly explosion at a factory in Norzagaray, Bulacan that resulted in two fatalities. He stressed the need for strict enforcement of safety regulations to prevent further loss of lives and damage to property.

According to Philippines News Agency, the PNP is conducting an ongoing investigation into the explosion, collaborating closely with the Bureau of Fire Protection and other relevant government agencies, as well as the local government of Bulacan. The aim is to assess the factory’s compliance with safety and permit requirements. Lt. Gen. Nartatez emphasized that local police units, in cooperation with the BFP, Scene of the Crime Operatives (SOCO), and the local government unit (LGU), are actively gathering evidence, interviewing witnesses, and reviewing compliance documents to get to the root of the incident and file charges if necessary.

Police are also investigating initial reports that suggest the facility might have been operating without proper authorization. Lt. Gen. Nartatez assured that if the factory owner is found to have violated the law, they will face accountability. He urged all factory owners to adhere to legal requirements, prioritizing safety over profit.

The explosion at the illegal fireworks factory in Barangay Partida, Norzagaray, Bulacan occurred around 11 a.m. on Wednesday, resulting in a fire that was extinguished by 11:50 a.m. Fire volunteers discovered the charred remains of the victims after the blaze was contained. The cause of the explosion is still under investigation.
