Phivolcs Chief Urges Vigilance Amid Declining Quakes in Sultan Kudarat

Sultan kudarat: Daily frequency of earthquakes in Sultan Kudarat has been decreasing, but the public is advised to stay vigilant, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said on Tuesday. "There is a general decreasing trend after the peak last Jan. 27 to Jan. 28, but this doesn't mean that (the series of earthquakes or swarm) has stopped," Phivolcs Director Teresito Bacolcol told the Philippine News Agency in an interview.

According to Philippines News Agency, while there are days when the earthquake frequency is decreasing, Bacolcol noted that there is still a possibility that the seismic activity would rise. "That is why, it is important to remain alert and prepared," he said. The decreasing daily frequency is encouraging, but there is no guarantee that a strong earthquake will no longer occur, he pointed out.

"Preparedness is still a key. Do the duck, cover and hold when there are strong earthquakes," Bacolcol said. He also advised people living in coastal areas to know the natural signs of a tsunami. People should evacuate immediately to higher ground when they observe any of these signs: strong shaking is felt, a roaring sound is heard, and a sudden drop of sea level is observed.

Meanwhile, from 10:52 p.m. Jan. 19 to 8 a.m. Feb. 3, Phivolcs has so far logged 3,319 earthquakes with magnitudes 1.3 to 5.9 around Sultan Kudarat. At least 1,010 of these were plotted or located, while 114 were felt.
