Cebu: Aftershocks from the Sept. 30, 2025 magnitude 6.9 offshore Northern Cebu earthquake have reached 20,725 as of 8 a.m. Tuesday, and the public is urged to be vigilant. Data from the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) showed aftershocks had magnitudes ranging from 1 to 5.8. At least 3,583 of the aftershocks were plotted or located, and 99 were felt.
According to Philippines News Agency, Phivolcs Director Teresito Bacolcol explained in an interview that it is normal for aftershocks to last for months to years, especially following a strong main shock. The Bogo Bay Fault was responsible for generating the magnitude 6.9 quake. On Monday, Phivolcs reported a magnitude 5.4 earthquake in Cebu, which was later downgraded to magnitude 5.1. Bacolcol confirmed that this earthquake, with its epicenter located 10 km southeast of Bogo City, is still part of the sequence of aftershocks.
"Aftershocks were recorded daily, but most of these quakes were small and not felt," Bacolcol added. Despite the continuous activity, Bacolcol emphasized the importance of vigilance among the residents of Cebu. He advised the public to expect occasional shaking and recommended taking immediate safety measures such as duck, cover, and hold in the event of strong shaking.
