Philippines and Vietnam Strengthen Defense Ties with New Agreement

Manila: The Philippines and Vietnam have renewed their defense cooperation agreement, aiming to enhance collaboration in maritime security, military education, and disaster response. This development marks a significant elevation of their bilateral relations to an Enhanced Strategic Partnership.

According to Philippines News Agency, the agreement was signed during a ceremony witnessed by President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. and visiting Vietnamese President To Lam at Malaca±ang. The memorandum of understanding, signed between the Department of National Defense of the Philippines and Vietnam's Ministry of National Defense, highlights a commitment to bolster joint capabilities in key areas of mutual interest.

President Marcos emphasized the strategic importance of this framework, particularly as both nations face ongoing challenges in the South China Sea, a region with multiple territorial claimants including Manila and Hanoi. "This strategically important framework will significantly bolster our joint capabilities in maritime security, military education, and disaster risk reduction and management," he stated.

The new agreement is timely, as both countries continue to advocate for peace, stability, and freedom of navigation and overflight in the South China Sea. President Marcos reiterated the Philippines' commitment to resolving disputes peacefully, in accordance with international law, including the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) and the 2016 Arbitral Award.

The Philippines and Vietnam first established a Strategic Partnership in 2015, and the current visit by President Lam has further elevated this relationship to an Enhanced Strategic Partnership, underscoring the deepening ties between the two Southeast Asian nations. Further specifics of the agreement have yet to be disclosed, but it marks a significant step forward in regional cooperation and security.
