Manila: Tennis star Alexandra Eala, the women's football team, gymnast Eldrew Yulo, billiards world titlist Carlo Biado, and pole vaulter EJ Obiena have been recognized by the Philippine Sportswriters Association (PSA) as monthly achievers for February and March.
According to Philippines News Agency, Eala reached a career-high No. 29 in the world rankings in mid-March following impressive performances in tournaments held in the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, and the United States. In Dubai, the 20-year-old made headlines by defeating Italian No. 8 Jasmine Paolini in a thrilling match, advancing to the Last 16 of the prestigious Indian Wells tournament.
The Filipinas, the national women's football team, secured their place in the FIFA Women's World Cup for the second consecutive time with a 2-0 victory over Uzbekistan. Key contributions came from Jael Marie Guy, whose assists led to goals by Angie Beard and Jaclyn Sawicki.
Eldrew Yulo, at only 18 years old, clinched the gold medal in the floor exercise at the FIG Artistic Gymnastics World Cup Series in Antalya, Turkey. Yulo is now aiming for additional golds in the Cairo leg of the competition.
