Vancouver:Philippine durian and mangosteen are now heading to Canada as part of the government's efforts to expand its agricultural exports.
According to Philippines News Agency, this initiative reflects the administration's commitment to broadening the markets for Philippine agricultural products, as directed by President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. Agriculture Secretary Francisco Tiu Laurel Jr. highlighted that these shipments are aimed at finding new markets for local commodities to enhance farm incomes and support rural development.
DA Undersecretary for High Value Export Crops and Agri-Fishery Export Development and Promotion, Philip Young, noted that these new export opportunities enable local producers and exporters to engage with the global market. He emphasized the importance of establishing global partnerships and securing market shares to showcase the quality of Philippine produce.
A trial shipment of 300 kilos of durian and 120 kilos of mangosteen was sent to Vancouver, consigned to Canadian buyer Fresh Makers Ltd., represented by Jackson Ng. This was transported via Philippine Airlines. Another shipment of 300 kilos of durian and 200 kilos of mangosteen is scheduled to depart for Toronto.
The Department of Agriculture reported that these shipments to Canada are based on the experience gained from exporting durian to France, where three air cargo shipments have already been completed, with ongoing weekly shipments.
