Manila: The Philippine Aquatics Inc. (PAI) has entered into a strategic partnership with Melbourne's Nunawading Swim Club (NSC), aiming to significantly enhance the landscape of competitive swimming in the Philippines. This collaboration is set to include a comprehensive program designed to uplift the sport for Filipino swimmers.
According to Philippines News Agency, NSC, renowned for its history of nurturing Olympians and world-class athletes since 1960, will work closely with PAI. The partnership, formalized through a memorandum of agreement signed on January 15, outlines plans for joint training camps, initiatives for the transfer of technical knowledge, and the creation of specialized development pathways for athletes and coaches.
The partnership will utilize top-tier venues in the Philippines, such as the facilities at New Clark City in Capas, Tarlac, and in Baguio City. These activities will combine international expertise with local support to enhance performance standards and promote a culture of achievement.
Xiandi Chua, a double gold medalist at the Southeast Asian Games (SEAG), exemplifies the benefits of global exposure and high-performance training. Chua, who trained at NSC, achieved a record-breaking win in the women's 200-meter backstroke at the 2023 SEAG in Cambodia, clocking in at 2 minutes and 13.20 seconds.
In the December 2025 SEAG held in Thailand, Chua was part of the victorious women's 4x100 relay team, alongside Olympian Kayla Sanchez, Heather White, and Chloe Isleta.
The memorandum of agreement was signed by NSC's chief executive officer Simon Beqir and president Matthew Miur, alongside PAI's secretary general Eric Buhain, executive director Anthony Reyes, foreign affairs head Akiko Thomson Guevarra, and Rowena Thelmo from the Filipino-Chinese Amateur Athletic Federation.
