Manila: The Philippines has formally taken over the chairship of the ASEAN Defense Ministers’ Meeting (ADMM) and ADMM Plus from Malaysia, emphasizing the importance of “internal cohesion and solidarity” amid increasing regional and global uncertainties. Department of National Defense (DND) Secretary Gilberto Teodoro Jr. stated that the Philippines’ leadership in the ADMM and ADMM-Plus is crucial during these uncertain times for the region and the world.

According to Philippines News Agency, Teodoro praised his Malaysian counterpart, Dato Seri Mohamed Khaled bin Nordin, for his effective leadership and commended Malaysia for guiding ASEAN’s defense cooperation with vision. He also reaffirmed the Philippines’ commitment to collaborating with other ASEAN member-states and dialogue partners to achieve a peaceful, stable, and prosperous Southeast Asia and the broader Indo-Pacific Region. The handover event took place at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre on Saturday.

Khaled expressed confidence in the Philippines’ capability to lead ASEAN’s defense track with purpose and integrity. He assured Malaysia’s full support, stating, “As we pass the torch to our dear friend, the Philippines, Malaysia gives its full and unwavering support. We have every confidence that the Philippines will continue to lead with the same spirit of dedication, integrity, and unity.”

During its 2026 chairship, the Philippines aims to enhance defense diplomacy and cooperation in areas such as maritime security, counterterrorism, humanitarian assistance, and disaster relief. The leadership also seeks to advance practical cooperation, promote capacity-building initiatives, and strengthen mechanisms to ensure peace, stability, and regional resilience.
