PH, Japan Collaborate on Energy Resilience and Clean Energy Transition

Kuala lumpur: The Philippines and Japan have joined forces to support each other in their energy transition efforts. This collaboration is part of their commitment to clean energy and ensuring energy resilience.

According to Philippines News Agency, the Department of Energy (DOE) announced that Energy Secretary Sharon Garin and Japanese Trade Minister Muto Yoji signed a memorandum of cooperation (MoC) during the 3rd Asia Zero Emission Community (AZEC) Ministerial Meeting in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. This agreement underscores the shared values and commitment to climate action and aligns with AZEC’s principles, emphasizing the importance of diverse energy options and tailored transition pathways for each nation.

The regional initiative AZEC promotes cooperation to achieve net-zero emissions in Asia, recognizing the necessity for varied approaches to carbon neutrality based on each country’s circumstances. By diversifying energy sources and adopting innovative technologies, the Philippines and Japan aim to enhance energy resilience and security, support low-carbon development, and contribute to climate change mitigation efforts under the Paris Agreement.

The MoC also focuses on encouraging the exchange of technological expertise and best practices from Japan to the Philippines, promoting clean-energy investment, and supporting skills development in emerging energy industries. This initiative is expected to drive economic transformation and enhance competitiveness in both countries.

The DOE highlighted that this partnership addresses critical energy and environmental challenges while deepening bilateral relations and fostering mutual trust and cooperation. Energy Secretary Sharon Garin described the collaboration as a long-term investment in a sustainable future, emphasizing its role in addressing climate change and building a resilient energy sector to power the economies of both nations for decades.

“This is not just about reducing emissions; it’s about creating jobs, fostering innovation, and improving the quality of life for our citizens. A sustainable energy sector is a foundation for a thriving economy and a healthy society,” Garin stated.
