Manila: The Philippines and South Korea have taken significant steps to strengthen their bilateral relations by signing at least 10 agreements focused on enhancing cooperation in critical sectors such as digitalization, agriculture, trade and investment, defense, and education. The signing took place at Malaca±an Palace in Manila, with President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. and South Korean President Lee Jae Myung overseeing the exchange of the memoranda of understanding (MOU).
According to Philippines News Agency, the agreements include a range of partnerships between various departments and ministries from both countries. The Department of Information and Communications Technology of the Philippines and the Ministry of Science and ICT of South Korea signed an MOU aimed at fostering digital cooperation. Additionally, an agreement was reached between the Department of Economy, Planning, and Development and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs concerning a Technology, Digitalization, and Innovation Program.
In the realm of defense, the Department of National Defense (DND) of the Philippines and South Korea's Defense Acquisition Program Administration entered into Amendment Number 2 of their Implementing Arrangement, which pertains to the procurement of certain defense materials. The DND also established a memorandum with the Ministry of Patriots and Veterans Affairs to enhance collaboration in the realm of patriots and veterans affairs.
Further cooperation was cemented between the Philippine National Police and the Korean National Police Agency through an MOU aimed at improving police cooperation. On the agricultural front, the Department of Agriculture signed an agreement with South Korea's Ministry of Agriculture, Food, and Rural Affairs to boost agricultural cooperation.
Trade and economic relations were also strengthened as the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) inked an MOU with the Ministry of Trade, Industry, and Resources on trade, investment, and economic cooperation. Another agreement was signed by the DTI with the Ministry of Intellectual Property to enhance collaboration in the field of intellectual property.
In the education sector, the Department of Education and the Ministry of Education signed an MOU to cooperate under the Special Program in Foreign Language in Philippine Schools. Furthermore, cultural ties were reinforced through an agreement between the National Commission for Culture and the Arts and the Ministry of Culture, Sports, and Tourism, focusing on cultural cooperation.
During a joint press conference following the bilateral meeting and presentation of these agreements, President Marcos expressed satisfaction with the progress made in advancing the Philippines-Republic of Korea Strategic Partnership. He highlighted the discussions he had with President Lee, which covered various areas of the bilateral partnership, including defense and security, maritime cooperation, economic and development cooperation, and people-to-people exchanges.
Marcos emphasized the significance of the newly signed agreements, which include defense materials procurement, veterans affairs, agriculture, trade, investment, economic cooperation, intellectual property, digital cooperation, digitalization and innovation, Korean language training in schools, cultural cooperation, and police cooperation. These agreements, he noted, are expected to sustain the momentum of the strategic partnership between the two nations.
In concluding remarks, President Marcos extended his gratitude to President Lee and his delegation for their productive visit, which has paved the way for deeper and more comprehensive cooperation between the Philippines and South Korea.
