Pasay city: The Philippines and Luxembourg are set to broaden their cooperation in trade, investments, creative industries, and technology as they approach the 80th anniversary of their diplomatic relations next year, the Department of Foreign Affairs announced. Discussions on enhancing partnerships in information communications technology, space technology, artificial intelligence, and labor mobility took place during a bilateral meeting between Foreign Affairs Secretary Ma. Theresa Lazaro and visiting Luxembourg Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Xavier Bettel.
According to Philippines News Agency, the focus will include creative industries and the anticipated conclusion of the Philippine-European Free Trade Agreement (FTA). Lazaro mentioned that the Philippines and Luxembourg are also finalizing an agreement to avoid double taxation, with more detailed trade and investment discussions scheduled with the trade secretary. Bettel expressed optimism about concluding the Philippine-EU FTA talks by the end of the year. Additionally, Lazaro and Bettel signed a memorandum of understanding on bilateral consultations, facilitating regular reviews and exchanges on regional and global developments.
Luxembourg also pledged its support for the Philippines' bid for a non-permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council in the upcoming elections. Bettel emphasized the importance of having a trustworthy country in the Security Council during challenging times. Both Lazaro and Bettel reiterated their commitment to multilateralism and the rule of law, discussing issues such as the situation in the West Philippine Sea.
The UNSC elections for the 2027-2028 term are scheduled to take place in New York this June. A successful bid by the Philippines would enable it to contribute to global peace and security through diplomacy and partnership.
