PH Aims to Climb Higher in Davis Cup Rankings

Manila: The Philippines is striving to continue its progression in the promotional ranking of the Davis Cup Asia-Oceania Zone next year. The national team, featuring Eric Jed Olivarez, AJ Lim, Arthur Craig Pantino, and doubles specialists Ruben Gonzales and Francis Casey Alcantara, recently earned promotion to Group III. This success followed a series of triumphs, including a decisive 2-0 victory over Kyrgyzstan during the Group IV qualifying matches held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

According to Philippines News Agency, the team was guided by coaches Joseph Lizardo and Johnny Arcilla, both of whom have previously competed in the Davis Cup. Olivarez expressed confidence about the team’s prospects in Group III, stating, “I think we’re still expected to win that (Group III). I believe we can still win.” He noted that regional competitors Thailand and Indonesia are participating in Group II, where the Philippines had competed prior to a suspension by the International Tennis Federation.

Olivarez also acknowledged the inspiration provided by Alex Eala, ranked No. 65 in the world for women’s singles. He highlighted Eala’s impact, saying, “The amount of honor she (Eala) is giving to the country. And we hope that she will be more of an inspiration for us and other aspiring Filipino athletes.” Olivarez is the son of Para±aque City Mayor Eric Olivarez.

The Philippine Sportswriters Association Forum, held at the Rizal Memorial Sports Complex, was attended by Philippine Tennis Association Executive Director Tonette Mendoza. She confirmed the same men’s team will compete in the Southeast Asian Games in Bangkok this December. Mendoza also mentioned ongoing efforts to finalize the women’s team, expressing hope that Eala will be available for the biennial event.
