Muntinlupa: The long Christmas and New Year holidays saw a surge in visits to persons deprived of liberty (PDLs) at the New Bilibid Prison (NBP) in Muntinlupa, the Bureau of Corrections (BuCor) said on Wednesday. In his report to BuCor Director General Gregorio Pio Catapang Jr., NBP acting superintendent, Supt. Roger Boncales, said 7,168 relatives and friends of PDLs trooped to the NBP to be with their loved ones between Dec. 23 and Jan. 2.
According to Philippines News Agency, of the total visitors, 4,676 were regular family visits and 2,492 were stay-in or conjugal visits. Catapang emphasized the significance of these visits for inmates, highlighting how they provide emotional support and serve as a reminder of life outside the confines of the corrections facility. The ability to spend quality time together, even behind bars, helps mitigate some of the emotional strain associated with incarceration.
The holiday celebrations may not resemble those experienced by the general public, but the holiday spirit certainly finds its way into the hearts of both PDLs and their families. From shared meals to exchanging simple gifts, the essence of the season is felt. Catapang added that the record number of visitors this holiday season exemplifies the enduring human spirit and the importance of maintaining relationships, reminding everyone that love knows no bounds, even where freedom is restricted.
