Negros oriental: The Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) in Negros Oriental is enhancing security at the province's ports to combat the influx of illegal drugs, an official disclosed on Wednesday. PDEA provincial chief Elmer Ebona announced that both seaports and airports will be under increased surveillance as they are considered key entry points for illegal substances.
According to Philippines News Agency, Ebona explained that while daily inspections are not feasible, PDEA will conduct random checks and work closely with other law enforcement units upon the creation of a multi-agency task force. He noted that limitations in inspecting baggage, cargo, and other items at the ports present challenges for law enforcement operations.
Ebona highlighted that not all ports, particularly roll-on/roll-off (RORO) facilities, are equipped with X-ray scanners, allowing vehicles to board vessels without thorough inspection. To address this, PDEA has deployed K-9 narcotic detection dogs trained to identify hidden drugs.
Beyond illegal drugs, Ebona mentioned that undocumented firearms and smuggled cigarettes are also entering the province undetected. Securing these entry and exit points is crucial for law enforcement to ensure community safety.
PDEA plans to establish a multi-agency task force involving the Philippine National Police, Philippine Coast Guard, Maritime Police, Philippine Ports Authority, and other relevant agencies to strengthen and coordinate efforts against illegal drug trafficking. This initiative supports the vision of newly appointed PDEA-Negros Island Region Director II Melvin S. Estoque to enhance anti-drug measures, improve intelligence gathering, and implement programs aimed at achieving a drug-free and safer community.
