Bicol: The Philippine Coast Guard in Bicol Region (PCG-5) recorded a total of 131,092 passengers during the observance of the Lenten season, officials reported Monday.
According to Philippines News Agency, PCG-Bicol commandant Commodore Ivan Roldan stated that PCG Bicol and its substations in six provinces conducted "Oplan Byaheng Ayos: Semana Santa and Summer Vacation" from March 28 to April 5. The initiative aimed to ensure continuous monitoring and rapid response to incidents across the region.
During the operation, PCG inspected 575 vessels, 523 motorbancas, and 16,891 rolling cargoes to ensure compliance with maritime safety regulations and prevent the transport of illegal and undocumented goods. "These efforts contributed to the orderly flow of maritime transport and strengthened port security across the region," Roldan said.
A total of 76,327 outbound passengers and 54,765 inbound passengers were safely facilitated through various ports in the region. Throughout the operation, 12 maritime-related incidents were recorded, including nine drowning cases. Of these, six individuals were successfully rescued, while three were confirmed dead.
One illegal activity involving PHP15 million worth of undocumented cigarettes was intercepted and documented in Masbate province. PCG personnel also responded to two medical assistance cases, including aid to a pediatric patient in Barangay Titong, Masbate, and assistance to a beachgoer who sustained a sprain. This highlights the agency's readiness to respond to both maritime emergencies and public health concerns.
Roldan mentioned that the proactive presence, intensified patrols, and continuous service efforts helped safeguard lives, ensure maritime safety, and protect the marine environment. PCG Bicol added that it remains committed to sustaining these efforts beyond the peak travel season by further enhancing its operational capability and responsiveness in service to the public.
