Albay: The Philippine Coast Guard in Bicol (PCG-5) continues to provide essential assistance to residents affected by the ongoing unrest at Mayon Volcano in Albay province. During a phone interview on Friday, PCG-5 Commandant Commodore Ivan Roldan highlighted the humanitarian efforts undertaken by the PCG, which include maintaining water-refilling operations with a desalination machine, as well as the unloading and distribution of food and non-food supplies.
According to Philippines News Agency, the PCG has distributed 4,850 hygiene kits, 3,773 bottles of water, and 3,036 units of relief goods to the affected residents. Commodore Roldan emphasized the importance of delivering timely relief and essential support, underscoring the PCG's commitment to compassionate public service in the face of emergencies and natural calamities.
Roldan also noted that PCG personnel have been conducting water purification operations, successfully producing 426 gallons of potable water from a desalination machine. 'We want to ensure the availability of safe and clean drinking water for the community amid the ongoing volcanic situation,' he stated.
Furthermore, the Coast Guard District Bicol Deployable Response Group, along with personnel from Coast Guard Station Albay, has been engaged in clearing operations at schools in the ashfall-impacted Guinobatan town. Roldan mentioned that these operations aim to restore a safe environment for students, teachers, and school staff, facilitating the resumption of regular school activities.
