PBBM Orders DPWH: Ensure New Piggatan Bridge is Safe, Durable

Manila: President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. on Thursday directed the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) to ensure that the new permanent bridge to replace the collapsed Piggatan Bridge in Cagayan is of high quality, safe, and durable. Marcos gave the directive after inspecting the Piggatan Detour Bridge in Alcala town, Cagayan, which was opened to motorists on Dec. 19, 2025, just 60 days after construction to ensure uninterrupted traffic.

According to Philippines News Agency, Palace Press Officer Claire Castro stated that President Marcos assessed the condition of the temporary bridge, which was built after the Piggatan Bridge was damaged due to overloading. Castro highlighted the government's swift action in establishing alternative routes to ensure continued travel in the area and the construction of a detour bridge as a temporary solution during the rebuilding of the main bridge.

Castro further elaborated that the President issued directives to the DPWH to guarantee that the new bridge's design is correct, its construction is properly executed, and that it meets safety, durability, and engineering standards. The Piggatan Bridge collapsed on Oct. 6, 2025, after trucks exceeding the bridge's 10-ton load limit crossed the structure, disrupting transport in the region.

The collapse of the bridge prompted the DPWH to initiate the emergency construction of a detour bridge to alleviate traffic and support agricultural transport while planning for the main bridge's reconstruction. According to reports, DPWH Secretary Vince Dizon announced earlier that the construction of a new Piggatan Bridge would commence in January or February this year.
