PBBM Focused on Governance, Not Legacy, Palace Asserts

Manila: Malaca±ang on Wednesday pushed back against criticism that President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. is preoccupied with building his legacy, stressing that the Chief Executive remains focused on governance and addressing the effects of the Middle East crisis. In a radio interview, Palace Press Officer Claire Castro said the President is prioritizing key sectors such as agriculture, healthcare, and education, alongside efforts to combat corruption.

According to Philippines News Agency, the Palace's statement comes after Davao City Rep. Paolo Duterte criticized Marcos, claiming the President is more concerned about his legacy than addressing rising costs fueled by the volatile oil supply disruption. Castro dismissed the remarks, saying critics often ignore the administration's actions, including measures to mitigate the impact of global oil price volatility triggered by the Middle East conflict.

She highlighted the government's efforts to secure fuel supply, roll out subsidies, and mobilize agencies under a 'whole-of-government' approach. 'Hindi po katulad ng dati na sinasabing walang magagawa. Ngayon po, kumikilos ang gobyerno para maibsan ang epekto sa taumbayan (Unlike his predecessor, who has admitted being unable to do anything, now the government is working to cushion the impact),' she said, referring to former president Rodrigo Duterte, the lawmaker's father.

Castro also underscored Marcos' push to sustain improvements in agricultural productivity, expand healthcare access, and address gaps in the education system. If anything, the President, she added, wants to be remembered for strengthening institutions without resorting to violence, a jab at the Duterte administration's controversial war on drugs.

'Ang nais ng Pangulo, walang patayan, walang extrajudicial killings (The President wants no killings, no extrajudicial killings,' Castro said.
