Kuala lumpur: President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. engaged in bilateral meetings with leaders from Cambodia, Thailand, Canada, Japan, and the European Council during the 47th ASEAN Summit and Related Meetings.
According to Philippines News Agency, President Marcos reaffirmed Manila’s support for peaceful conflict resolution between Thailand and Cambodia during his meeting with Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet. They discussed the importance of dialogue and international law in resolving the Thai-Cambodian conflict. The meeting also highlighted the signing of the Terms of Reference of the ASEAN Observer Team as a positive step in conflict resolution efforts.
Thailand and Cambodia signed an expanded ceasefire agreement in Kuala Lumpur, witnessed by ASEAN chair Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim and United States President Donald Trump. Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet expressed strong support for the Philippines’ upcoming ASEAN Chairmanship in 2026.
During talks with Thailand’s Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul, President Marcos extended condolences for the passing of Her Majesty Queen Sirikit. Both leaders committed to strengthening cooperation in tourism, trade, investments, and agricultural exchanges. Thailand also expressed full support for the Philippines’ ASEAN Chairmanship in the coming year.
In his meeting with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Joseph Carney, discussions centered on enhancing people-to-people ties, boosting trade and investments, and expanding energy sector cooperation. President Marcos expressed gratitude for Canada’s support in upholding international law, particularly the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea.
President Marcos also met with Japanese Prime Minister Takaichi Sanae, participating in the ASEAN meetings for the first time post-election, and European Council President Antonio Costa. The Presidential Communications Office (PCO) mentioned that further details on these meetings would be shared later.
