Makati city: President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. emphasized the Philippines' dedication to ASEAN centrality, highlighting the necessity for the regional bloc to collaboratively reclaim its influence as a global economic powerhouse.
According to Philippines News Agency, during his address at the ASEAN Editors and Economic Opinion Leaders Forum in Makati City, Marcos referred to the region's last peak in global economic influence in 2019. He stressed that ASEAN member states share a common aspiration to return to that prominent role. He pointed out that while member countries have different economic conditions, the shared characteristic of being maritime nations, with the exception of Lao PDR, provides a foundation for collaboration.
The President noted that achieving these goals requires tailored approaches for each country. However, he underscored the importance of working in harmony to meet both national objectives and the collective aspirations of ASEAN.
Marcos also underscored the importance of strengthening intra-ASEAN trade and supply chains, especially in light of disruptions caused by the Covid-19 pandemic. He mentioned ongoing efforts to harmonize import procedures and better coordinate policies among member states. Initiatives such as the proposed common ASEAN grid were cited as means to boost regional resilience and competitiveness.
He emphasized the need for stronger intra-regional business ties, suggesting that understanding each country's role and legal frameworks is crucial for ASEAN to re-establish itself as a significant player in the global economy. Marcos highlighted that with the Philippines set to chair ASEAN in 2026, it is vital for national economic strategies to align with regional objectives to ensure shared growth and stability.
