Parking Spaces in Laoag Designated for Persons with Disabilities Only

Laoag: The Persons with Disabilities Affairs Office (PDAO) in Laoag is urging commercial establishments to adhere to the proper use of parking spaces designated for persons with disabilities (PWDs). 'A reserved PWD parking space is meant for PWDs only and not for senior citizens,' stated Christoper King Medina, head of the PDAO, during a media interview. This statement was made following observations of non-compliance with the PWD parking law by some commercial establishments, particularly in downtown Laoag.

According to Philippines News Agency, the law's implementing rules and regulations specify that accessible parking slots are reserved for vehicles driven by or transporting persons with disabilities. Medina emphasized that senior citizens with mobility issues can only utilize these spaces if they possess a PWD ID. To facilitate identification, the PDAO is issuing car passes or parking permits to PWDs for the appropriate use of these parking areas.

Medina also called on the support of both public and private stakeholders, urging more establishments to adopt non-discriminatory priority parking policies. These policies aim to ensure reasonable accommodation and accessibility for all vulnerable and disadvantaged sectors. In a related effort, the Federated Association of PWDs in the province reiterated the public's obligation to respect the benefits and privileges accorded to PWDs by law, regardless of the nature of the disability, whether apparent or non-apparent.
