Palace Optimistic About Swift Passage of Priority Bills Under New Senate Leadership

Manila: Malaca±ang on Wednesday expressed optimism about the immediate passage of the Marcos administration's priority bills under the leadership of newly installed Senate President Sherwin Gatchalian. In a statement, Palace Press Officer Claire Castro welcomed Gatchalian's formal assumption of the Senate presidency during a special session, ending the two-week leadership row with Sen. Alan Peter Cayetano.

According to Philippines News Agency, Castro conveyed the Palace's congratulations to Gatchalian, emphasizing confidence that the Senate and the House of Representatives, led by House Speaker Faustino Dy III, would fulfill their legislative mandate. The aim is to pass measures benefiting the Filipino people. She also expressed gratitude to lawmakers ready to heed President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.'s directive to act on priority bills.

Castro reiterated the administration's focus on delivering fast and efficient service to the Filipino populace, asserting that legislative priorities should be enacted to strengthen and expand government assistance to citizens. The Palace's vision aligns with President Marcos's aspiration for swift and organized public service.

Earlier on Wednesday, Sen. Alan Peter Cayetano conceded his position as Senate president after learning that Sen. Joel Villanueva would join the majority bloc, completing the 13-member quorum required to elect a new Senate leader. The leadership change is expected to facilitate progress on crucial legislative agendas.

President Marcos, through Proclamation 1318 issued on Monday, called for a special session of Congress on June 17. The session aims to expedite priority legislation focused on social protection, education, and healthcare, especially in light of ongoing challenges, including the recent Mindanao earthquake. Additionally, the special session will enable the Commission on Appointments to address pending appointments in the Cabinet, military, and foreign service, ensuring government continuity and stability.
