Manila: The Department of Justice (DOJ) is currently reviewing the United States' request to extradite Kingdom of Jesus Christ leader Apollo Quiboloy, as announced by Malaca±ang on Tuesday. Palace Press Officer Claire Castro revealed that the DOJ is meticulously examining the extensive documents submitted in relation to the extradition request.

According to Philippines News Agency, the DOJ is tasked with determining whether the individual named in the extradition request is indeed Quiboloy and if the principle of 'double criminality' is applicable. This principle requires that the offenses Quiboloy is sought for in the US must also be recognized as criminal offenses under Philippine law, as Castro explained during a Palace press briefing.

Castro highlighted that the DOJ aims to reach a decision swiftly, although the voluminous nature of the documents has rendered the review process comprehensive. She emphasized the urgency of the matter, stating, "Let us wait until they finish, but they know that a decision should be made promptly."

The US extradition request is linked to Quiboloy's 2021 indictment in California, which includes charges such as sex trafficking of minors, fraud, and bulk cash smuggling. The extradition treaty between the Philippines and the US, signed in November 1994, outlines that the requested state may 'temporarily surrender' an individual sought for extradition if the person is 'being prosecuted or is serving a sentence' in the requested country.

Should the extradition proceed, Quiboloy would be transferred to US custody, with the treaty stipulating that he 'shall be returned' to the Philippines upon the conclusion of the proceedings against him.
