Palace Defers Decision on ‘No Work, No Pay’ Bill to Congress

Manila: Malaca±ang has expressed recognition of the potential advantages of the proposed 'no work, no pay' bill but has decided to leave the matter to Congress, emphasizing that President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. will not intervene in the legislative process.

According to Philippines News Agency, Palace Press Officer Claire Castro stated that the President was questioned about the proposal, which is authored by House Majority Leader Sandro Marcos. Castro highlighted that lawmaking falls outside the President's jurisdiction. "Ang sabi lamang ng Pangulo, trabaho po 'yan ng mambabatas at hindi siya makikialam kung ito po ay maisasabatas (The President said this is the job of legislators and he will not interfere if it becomes law)," Castro mentioned during a Palace press briefing.

Castro noted that the proposal's underlying principle holds merit, explaining, "Kung pag-uusapan po in general, maganda po ito para naman malaman nila na ang mga 'di nagtatrabaho ay di naman dapat makinabang sa pondo ng bayan (In general, this is a good proposal so that those who do not work will know they should not benefit from public funds)."

Nevertheless, she reiterated that President Marcos will take action only after the bill is officially submitted to him for review. "Kung ano lang ho ang maihahain sa kanya, ang mababasa niya, 'yun lang po ang aaralin (He will only study what is formally presented to him)," Castro stated.

House Bill No. 7432 aims to link the salaries and benefits of senators and representatives to their attendance and participation in legislative duties, addressing public demands for increased accountability in both houses of Congress.
