Palace Acknowledges Private Firms’ WFH Plans as Significant Energy-Saving Measure

Manila: Malaca±ang on Friday described as a 'big help' the work-from-home (WFH) arrangements proposed by private companies to conserve energy amid rising fuel costs. In a press briefing, Palace Press Officer Claire Castro said such initiatives from the private sector are welcome but will not be mandated by the government.

According to Philippines News Agency, Castro emphasized that while the government appreciates these proposals, it will not impose them on private companies. She acknowledged the challenges faced by workers due to increasing fuel prices linked to tensions in the Middle East, and suggested that the WFH schemes could provide significant relief. Castro reiterated that the President will not dictate the operations of private enterprises.

Castro highlighted the benefits of these private companies' plans, especially given the ongoing conflict in the Gulf region. She noted that if businesses believe these measures will benefit the country, protect public interest, and reduce fuel consumption, they are indeed valuable suggestions.

The Department of Labor and Employment previously indicated that the private sector could implement flexible work arrangements. These include a four-day or compressed workweek or a WFH scheme to help reduce operational costs and safeguard workers' welfare.

Assuring the public, Castro stated that the government is proactively addressing concerns about potential rotational brownouts and declining electricity supply, particularly during the summer. She mentioned the declaration of a national energy emergency to prevent a crisis.

Castro concluded by highlighting the proactive measures being taken to avoid an unfavorable situation in the country, caused by the ongoing crisis in the Middle East.
